04 — Influence
The six forms of power an engine produces
Ask an operator what a large audience gets them and the answer is almost always pricing power, because it is the form that shows up in the accounts. It is the fourth of six, and arguably the least durable.
Definitional power
You supply the vocabulary. When your framing becomes the way buyers describe the problem, every competitor has to argue on ground you laid out.
The quietest and most durable form. It rarely looks like influence from inside.
Agenda power
You decide what the market is currently discussing. Attention is finite, so setting the topic is the same act as removing other topics from consideration.
Cheap to use, expensive to keep. It decays the moment cadence stops.
Distribution power
Direct access to an audience with no intermediary able to reprice, throttle or deplatform the relationship.
The only form that survives a platform changing its terms overnight.
Pricing power
Recognition converts into margin. The buyer is choosing a known quantity, and known quantities do not compete on unit price.
The form that shows up first in the accounts, which is why it gets mistaken for the whole point.
Gravity
Talent, partners and opportunities arrive unsolicited. Recruiting and business development stop being purely outbound functions.
Compounds silently. Easy to miss until you compare against a year ago.
Optionality
A standing channel makes the next move cheap to test. New offers, new categories and new positions can be put in front of a real audience without paying to assemble one.
The form that matters most in a market that turns over quickly.
Definitional power is the one worth building toward. When your framing becomes the language the market thinks in, competitors have to argue on ground you surveyed.
It is also the form most often given away by accident. An operator who publishes a genuinely better way to describe a problem, then abandons the vocabulary in favour of whatever the category already says, hands the position to the next firm willing to hold it.
The six are not a sequence and you do not get them in order. But they share a precondition: an audience that chose to listen and can leave whenever it wants. Every form of leverage on this page is downstream of that one fact, which is why the guardrails are not optional.
